How can I use Cloudflare on my Domain?
Using Cloudflare on your MumuHost domain
Cloudflare is a Content Delivery Network (CDN) and security service that helps make websites faster, more secure, private, and reliable. By caching content and routing traffic through its global network, Cloudflare can significantly improve page load times and protect your site from common online threats.
In addition to CDN and security features, Cloudflare also provides robust DNS management. This makes it a great option even for standalone domains that do not yet have hosting.
Cloudflare offers both free and paid plans. The free plan is sufficient for most websites and provides excellent performance and security features.
Signing Up for Cloudflare
To create a Cloudflare account:
- Visit the Cloudflare website.
- Enter your email address and choose a password.
- Accept Cloudflare’s Terms and Conditions by ticking the checkbox.
- Click Sign Up.
Your Cloudflare account will be created, and you can then link your domain to Cloudflare.
Activating Cloudflare for a Domain
- After logging in, click the Domains icon in your Cloudflare dashboard.
- Select the domain you want to activate Cloudflare on.
- Click Provision domain with CNAME setup.
- Allow a few moments for the system to complete the setup.
Once Cloudflare is active, the domain status will show as Active. You will also see an orange cloud icon next to the domain’s DNS records, indicating that traffic is being routed through the Cloudflare network.
Enabling Cloudflare for Subdomains
By default, Cloudflare enables protection for the www subdomain.
If you want additional subdomains to use Cloudflare:
- Locate the subdomain in the DNS settings.
- Click the grey cloud icon next to the subdomain to turn it orange.
An orange cloud means the subdomain is active and protected by Cloudflare.
Redirecting the Root Domain to www
Because Cloudflare’s CNAME setup applies to the www subdomain only, you must redirect traffic from the root domain (for example, mysite.com) to the www version (www.mysite.com).
This ensures that all visitors benefit from Cloudflare’s performance and security features and prevents duplicate content or routing issues.
You can configure this redirect using:
- Cloudflare Page Rules, or
- Redirect settings at your hosting provider or DNS manager
